COPYING CHARACTERS TO THE TEST SERVER

WHAT IS THE TEST SERVER?

The Test Server is an area of game play that allows you to preview the upcoming changes and updates to CoX. It's a place that gives you an opportunity to provide feedback to the developers.

This area is set up specifically for the testing of all game updates *before* they are brought to the live servers. Players can login, preview and test the new planned features, try out fixes and tweaks to offer bug reports or suggestions.
HOW DOES THE TEST SERVER DIFFER FROM THE LIVE SERVER?

One word to keep in mind is "temporary."
- Content and characters copied to the Test Server can be wiped at any time.
- Players can expect a lower level of support since the majority of this service is geared towards the live servers.
- Bug reporting and petitions are handled differently, as the issues brought before the developers need to be given more time for in depth study, review, and reproduction.
HOW TO ACCESS THE TRAINING ROOM TEST SERVER

To access the Test Server, you'll need to download and install a second copy of the game to patch up the test files to your computer. The steps for this process are explained below.

Locate the file named 'CohUpdater.exe'. If the game was installed using the default folder, this file would be located inside 'C:\Program Files\City of Heroes'.
After locating the City of Heroes game folder, create a shortcut for the CohUpdater.exe file inside the CoH folder. To do this, right click on the file you wish to create a shortcut for, then select the 'Create Shortcut" option from the popup window to create a shortcut.
After creating the shortcut, right click on the new shortcut and open the Properties option.
In the target window, add the following flag to the end of the line:

[space]-test
1. The [space] designates you hitting the space bar. DO NOT type the word [space] before the -test line.
2. The finished line of text should resemble this:
  "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -test
3. The selection SHOULD NOT look like this:
  "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"[SPACE]-test
After adding the flag, run the shortcut.

When running the shortcut for the first time, you will be asked if you want to install the Test Client to the default directory. Choose YES if you want to install it there, or choose NO to install it into a different directory.

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND INSTALLING THE TEST CLIENT TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION OTHER THAN YOUR NORMAL GAME CLIENT.

HOW TO COPY CHARACTERS TO THE TRAINING ROOM TEST SERVER

After the client installs, you will need to copy a character over to the test server. To do this, go to this URL: https://secure.cityofheroes.com/cgi-bin/coh_transfer.pl
Use your City of Heroes user name and password to login.
1. After logging in, select the server and character you wish to copy to the Test Server. It will take several minutes, but the character will copy.
2. After copying your character to the Test Server, you should be able to play on the Test Client. However, before you can play, you'll need to run the new shortcut you created to the CohUpdater. Copy the shortcut, you created earlier, by dragging and dropping it from the City of Heroes folder to your desktop. You will need to click this shortcut every time you want to access the Test Server.
